Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, sociologist, historian, journalist and revolutionary who developed the theory of Marxism. He is considered one of the most influential thinkers in human history. Born in 1818 to a wealthy family in Prussia, Marx studied philosophy at university before becoming a journalist and writing about political economy. He published his seminal work, The Communist Manifesto, in 1848 with Friedrich Engels, and later fled to Paris after a failed uprising in Germany. There he continued to develop his theories before fleeing again after Louis Napoleon’s coup d’Ă©tat. Marx spent the rest of his life living in London until his death from tubercular meningitis in 1883.
