Ulysses S. Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio on April 27, 1822. He grew up in a small town and learned the value of hard work at an early age. Grant attended the United States Military Academy at West Point and graduated in 1843. He served in the Mexican-American War, and then returned to civilian life. In 1861, the Civil War began and Grant was appointed commander of Union forces. He led successful campaigns against the Confederacy and was eventually promoted to General-in-Chief of all Union armies. After the war ended, Grant was elected president of the United States.
