He served as the inspiration for many artists that followed him including John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Keith Jarrett and more. Born on October 10th in 1917 this American artist has been recognized with awards such as Down Beat’s Lifetime Achievement Award (1972) and Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Performance – Soloist (1981), Best Jazz Recording – Soloist (1988). In 1997 he was inducted into the National Academy of Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame.
