What was Simón Bolívar’s early life like?

Simón Bolívar was born on July 24, 1783, in Caracas, Venezuela. Neither Bolívar’s aristocrat father nor his mother lived to see his 10th birthday.
Bolívar was instead raised by his uncle, who administered his inheritance and provided him with tutors.

One of Bolívar’s tutors—a man named Simón Rodríguez—introduced him to the world of liberal thought.

Under Rodríguez’s guidance, Bolívar read and studied the likes of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Voltaire, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

It’s likely that Rodríguez’s early lessons in liberalism influenced Bolívar in his later decision to rebel against Spanish rule.
