A Republican who served as governor of Ohio before his election to the presidency, Hayes is best known for his controversial election victory in 1876, which ended Reconstruction and resulted in the Compromise of 1877. During his time in office, Hayes oversaw the end of military Reconstruction in the South and promoted civil service reform. He also advocated for women’s suffrage and Indian reform.
