In the early 1950s, Desmond Tutu was a young man who believed in equality and justice for all South Africans. In 1955 he was arrested by police while being part of a peaceful demonstration against apartheid. He would spend almost two years in jail before going into exile to continue his work as an activist. By this time he had become known as the voice of the voiceless because so many people looked up to him for guidance and inspiration. He continued speaking out against apartheid until it finally ended with Nelson Mandela’s election in 1994.
