Dante was born in Florence, Italy, on May 6, 1265. His family was wealthy and influential, but Dante’s early life was also marked by tragedy. His father died when Dante was only nine, and two years later his mother passed away. When he was just 25 years old, Dante was exiled from his native city after being involved in a political dispute. Despite these challenges, Dante went on to achieve great things as a writer and thinker. He is best known for his epic poem The Divine Comedy, which tells the story of a man’s journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Dante’s work has been enormously influential over the centuries and continues to be read and studied today.
