      Carl Sagan, a champion of science and the space program, is best known for his contributions to astronomy. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 9th 1934. His father was a Jewish immigrant from Russia who worked as a jeweler. His mother was also an immigrant from Russia and she had been raised in Ukraine by a family of prosperous farmers before her parents were killed during the Russian Revolution.
