Shirley Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924. Shirley chisholm became the first African American woman to be elected to congress in 1968 and she served 7 terms until 1983. Shirley is also known for being the first black candidate for a major party’s nomination for president of the United States. She ran as an independent candidate against George McGovern and Hubert Humphrey during 1972 presidential election. She is often credited with creating political opportunities for women candidates who followed her. Chisholm died from cancer in Florida at age 80 on January 1, 2005.
