Ralph Waldo Emerson was born on May 25, 1803 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. Emerson briefly attended Harvard University before he started a career as a schoolteacher. After a few years teaching, he decided to become a minister like his father. However, he only served as a pastor for a short time before resigning due to differences with his congregation. It was during this time that Emerson began writing essays about his personal philosophy which eventually led to him becoming one of the most important thinkers of his generation. In 1832, Emerson’s first major work, Nature, was published anonymously.
