Napoleon Bonaparte was born on August 15, 1769, in Corsica. He quickly rose through the ranks of the French military, and by age 26 he was head of the army. In 1799, he staged a coup d’รฉtat and became first consul of France. He later crowned himself emperor in 1804. Napoleon’s military campaigns brought vast new territories under French control, but his authoritarian rule sparked revolts. After a series of costly defeats in the Napoleonic Wars, he was finally exiled to Elba in 1814. Less than a year later, he escaped and returned to power briefly before being defeated at Waterloo and captured.
