Marva Collins was born in 1937 and spent her first four years of life living on a plantation in Mississippi. Her father left the family when she was two, and her mother died shortly after. She started working at age six to help provide for herself and her younger brother. After moving north to Chicago, she enrolled in school where she excelled academically. At age 16, Marva became pregnant out of wedlock but refused to abort the baby (she married the father soon after). Despite this setback, Marva graduated from college with honors while raising five children as a single parent. In 1983, Marva founded Westside Preparatory School which is now ranked among America’s best high schools by U.
