She started working at age six to help provide for herself and her younger brother. After moving north to Chicago, she enrolled in school where she excelled academically. At age 16, Marva became pregnant out of wedlock but refused to abort the baby (she married the father soon after). Despite this setback, Marva graduated from college with honors while raising five children as a single parent.
