Lauren Bacall was born Betty Joan Perske in the Bronx, New York City, on September 16, 1924. The daughter of Jewish immigrants from Poland and Romania, she had a difficult childhood marked by frequent relocations and the death of her father. She began acting while attending high school in New York, and after briefly working in retail, she made her Broadway debut in 1942. Her screen debut came the following year with To Have and Have Not. Married to Humphrey Bogart from 1945 until his death in 1957, Bacall became a Hollywood star in her own right. She continued to act steadily throughout the remainder of her life. Bacall died at age 89 on August 12, 2014.
