Jonas Salk was born in New York City on October 28, 1914. From an early age, he was interested in science and reasoning. After completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, Salk began to study viruses. In 1947, he announced his discovery of a vaccine for polio. This vaccine would later be put into use and would help to eradicate polio from much of the world. Although Jonas Salk is most well-known for his work with polio, he also made significant contributions to virology, immunology, and cancer research. He passed away on June 23, 1995.
