He went on to study journalism at Lincoln University, where he also played football. After college, Parks worked as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration (FSA), which captured the daily lives of American farmers and rural workers during the Great Depression. His work with the FSA led to a successful career as a photojournalist and film director. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Parks was also an advocate for civil rights and education.
