Gordon Parks was born on November 30, 1912, in Fort Scott, Kansas. As a young boy, he showed an interest in art and music, which his family supported. He went on to study journalism at Lincoln University, where he also played football. After college, Parks worked as a photographer for the Farm Security Administration (FSA), which captured the daily lives of American farmers and rural workers during the Great Depression. His work with the FSA led to a successful career as a photojournalist and film director. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Parks was also an advocate for civil rights and education.
