Gertrude Stein was an American writer and art collector who was born on February 3, 1874 in Allegheny City. She grew up with three siblings: one brother and two sisters. Her father, Daniel, ran a clothing store but died of yellow fever when she was eight years old. After her father’s death Gertrude’s mother moved the family to Vienna and then Paris where they lived for about five years before returning to America in 1893. In 1901 Gertrude married her life partner Alice B Toklas after living together since 1898 – the ceremony took place at their home 27 Rue de Fleurus in Paris.
