Erwin Rommel was a German Field Marshal and Commander of the Afrika Korps in World War II. He is often referred to as the Desert Fox for his exploits as commander of Panzer Army Africa, which he led until being recalled by Adolf Hitler to defend Berlin against the Red Army’s advance on that city near the end of World War II. His name has also been spelled with an umlaut ä (Rommel), but this spelling is not used by his descendants or in English-speaking countries.
