When most people think of the early days of computing, they imagine male scientists and mathematicians in white lab coats eagerly working on new ways to make machines faster and more efficient. However, women were also integral players in the development of early computing, including African American mathematician Dorothy Vaughan. Vaughan was born in 1910 in Kansas City and showed a talent for mathematics from an early age. She attended college at Wilberforce University, where she became one of the first black American students to earn a degree in mathematics. In 1939, Vaughan started working at NASA’s Langley Research Center as one of the few black female mathematicians. There she played a key role in developing critical early computer software programs.
