Cesar Chavez, born on a small farm in Arizona, had an early start in life that would set the tone for his future. His parents were migrant workers and he spent much of his childhood looking after their animals. He was the youngest of eight children, but this didn’t stop him from learning to read before entering school at age five or from graduating college through correspondence courses by nineteen. In 1937, he married Helen Fabela and they had three children together. They soon joined with other families who were trying to organize better working conditions for migrant workers across America’s West Coast.
