As a young girl, Barbara Jordan wanted to be a teacher. She loved being in school and helping her classmates learn. But when she was just 14 years old, Jordan’s life changed forever. She was diagnosed with polio, which left her paralyzed from the waist down. Despite this setback, Jordan refused to give up on her dreams. She continued to study hard and became one of the first African American women to earn a law degree from the University of Texas. Jordan then went on to become a powerful civil rights leader and politician. Her accomplishments are many, but she is perhaps best known for her stirring speech at the 1976 Democratic National Convention. In it, she urged Americans to rise above their differences and embrace unity in pursuit of common goals.
