Anthony de Mello was born in May of 1931 in Bombay, India. He was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1957 and taught spiritual psychology at Sophia University in Tokyo from 1973 to 1985. In 1986 he moved to the United States, where he became a popular retreat leader and speaker. De Mello died suddenly of a heart attack on August 1, 1987, at the age of 56. A prolific author, his books have been translated into more than 30 languages.
