Andrew Johnson was born in 1808 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was orphaned at a young age and apprenticed to a tailor. He later opened his own tailoring business, which failed during the Panic of 1837. Johnson then became a teacher in Greeneville, Tennessee. In 1843, he was elected to the state legislature. In 1865, Johnson became president after Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. As president, he struggled to rebuild the South after the Civil War and clashed with Congress over Reconstruction policies. Johnson was impeached in 1868 but acquitted by one vote. He served out his term and retired from public life. Andrew Johnson died in 1875.
