Andrew Carnegie was born on November 25, 1835, in Dunfermline, Scotland. He immigrated to the United States with his family in 1848 and settled in Pittsburgh. Carnegie began his career as a telegrapher and railroad worker. In 1865, he became president of the Pennsylvania Railroad. He later founded the Carnegie Steel Company, which became the largest steel producer in the world. Carnegie was a philanthropist who gave away most of his fortune during his lifetime. He died on August 11, 1919, in Lenox, Massachusetts.
